Drilling Pearls
Drilling Pearls
It is no secret that pearls are part of some of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry; but what do you do if you don’t know what to do with your pearls? The great thing about beads, pearls and most gemstones is that they can be drilled. Once you drill a hole into them, they can be hung on earrings, necklaces, and other pieces of jewelry. The most common type of drilling tool is an ultrasonic drilling machine. This machine makes the most accurate holes. Be very careful when you are drilling holes into your pearls. Since pearls are very fragile, they can break during the drilling process. Make sure you take your precious pearls to an expert. A professional will know what the best drilling method is for your type of pearl. Brittle materials are more likely to overheat and can crack with the drilling rotation. How to drill your pearls:

There are many different places to drill your pearls. Trust a professional since drilling is very delicate work. We can do a side drill or top drill or any other way you like. We can do a full-drilling or a half-drilling and can suggest the best for your precious pearls.
Full-drilling- This involves drilling a hole that gores right through your pearl. This is the best way to make necklaces since the pearl strand has to pass through the cultured pearl.
Half-drilling- This is the best method to make pearl earring, pendants, rings, brooches or tie tacks. The pearl is only drilled halfway through.

How is drilling done?
The pearls are put in between two concave cushions on opposite sides of the bushings. The pearls can be clamped in an inverted position or an upright position as long as the pearl is aligned with the correct drill bit. The pearl must be perfectly aligned. The correct bit sized will now be chosen, like a 1mm or 2.5mm dill bit. This process of drilling has been improved over the years and the process has been made much easier. Many years ago, pearls were drilled using bow drills that were held by hand. The first drills were made by American Indians. Only a few hundred pearls were produced using the old method and the new method yields thousands per sitting. Still, Mabe pearls cannot be drilled with holes over 0.7mm.
The drill points should be blunt and will have a V shape. To avoid jolting the pearl, the drill should have the proper revolutions. If the drill should break in the pearl, then make sure drill opposite to remove the piece that is broken.

The best needles to use are ones that are very thin and made of steel. These needles will allow the dust that gets produced during drilling to move out of the way to prevent clogging. Some people even say that milk is a good lubricant for the drill!
